1. Medial Collateral ligament injury
Where is the pain:
- Superficial pain on inside of knee.
Caused by:
- Force to the outside of the knee (which ‘opens up’ the inside of the knee)
- Happens more commonly with knee slightly bent.
Signs and symptoms:
- Pain on the inside of the knee with or without bruising.
What you should do:
- PRICE regime for 48-72 hours.
- Maintain as much knee movement as possible with gentle bending and straightening in lying or sitting.
- Knee supports are not usually advised (Unless gross instability)
- Consult your local physiotherapist.

2. Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury
Where is the pain:
- Global pain around the knee, pain usually feels deep within the knee.
Caused by:
- A twisting injury to the knee with foot planted on the ground and the knee slightly bent.
Signs and symptoms:
- Usually IMMEDIATE swelling.
- Unable to continue activity.
- Knee feels unstable.
What you should do:
- PRICE regime for 48-72 hours to manage the swelling.
- Maintain as much movement as possible of the knee as pain allows with gentle bending and straightening of the knee in lying or sitting.
- Crutches, non-weight bearing for 5-7 days.
- Consult your local physiotherapist

3. Cartilage tear (Meniscal tear)
Where is the pain:
- Deep within the knee
- Can be inside or outside of knee
- May be felt at the front or at the back of the knee
Caused by:
- A twisting injury to the knee with foot planted on the ground and the knee slightly bent.
Signs and symptoms:
- Knee may locks in one position (Visit Accident and Emergency)
- May complain of knee clicking or ‘catching’
What you should do:
- PRICE regime for 48-72 hours.
- Maintain as much knee movement as possible with gentle bending and straightening in lying or sitting.
- Crutches, non-weight bearing for 5-7 days.
- Consult your local physiotherapist.
